Why Learn Portuguese?

There are many reasons for people to learn Portuguese as a foreign language and below you can find the 5 most common reasons.

1. Your Partner is Brazilian

You have a Brazilian boyfriend/girlfriend or your husband/wife is Brazilian. You want to communicate in Portuguese with your partner, his/her parents and family members.

2. You live, work or study in Brazil

Learning Portuguese is a must if you live, work or study in Brazil in order to be able to communicate with the local people in Brazil. Most Brazilians speak only Portuguese.

3. You work with a Brazilian company

You work with a Brazilian company and you may have contact with Brazil and some Brazilian colleagues. Speaking Portuguese could be an advantage for you to communicate with your Brazilian colleagues and to advance in your career.

4. You travel often to Brazil for business or holiday

As you travel often to Brazil for business or holiday, you have noticed that you can communicate in English with only some business partners and at the hotel. Most Brazilians do not speak English and to interact with them, you need to learn Portuguese to fully enjoy your stay in Brazil, be it for a short business trip or holiday.

5. You do Brazilian Martial Arts (Jiu-Jitsu or Capoeira)

You are a Capoeira or Jiu-Jitsu practitioner and your teacher is Brazilian. You have contact with many Brazilians and you learn a great deal about the Brazilian culture through capoeira and jiu-jitsu. You don't want to miss this opportunity and you know you will have more fun if you can sing along to Brazilians songs and know how to pronounce the words and names in Portuguese.

From my experience as a Portuguese teacher, these are the 5 most common reasons for people to learn Portuguese as a foreign language, but there may be other reasons not mentioned here.
