Doce de abóbora (Pumpkin compote)

 

"Doce de abóbora" is tasty and very popular in Brazil.

Ingredientes: Ingredients:
1 abóbora pequena 1 small pumpkin
açúcar (metade da quantidade de abóbora) sugar (half of the pumpkin amount)
10 cravos 10 cloves
1 canela em pau 1 cinammon stick
Modo de fazer: Preparation:
1. Descasque a abóbora e pique-a em pedaços. 1. Peel the pumpkin and cut it into pieces.
2. Lave a ábobora. 2. Rinse the pumpkin.
3. Coloque a ábobora numa panela e adicione um pouco de água.  3. Put the pumpkin in a pan and add a little bit of water.
4. Cozinhe a abóbora até ficar macia. 4. Cook the pumpkin until soft.

5. Amasse a abóbora com um garfo.

5. Mash the pumpkin with a fork.

6. Adicione o açúcar, o cravo, a canela e mexa bem.

6. Add the sugar, the clove, the cinnamon and mix well.

7. Cozinhe a abóbora em fogo baixo, mexendo sempre, até a água secar e a abóbora soltar do fundo da panela.

7. Cook the pumpkin on low heat, stirring constantly; until the water has evaporated and the pumpkin loosens from the bottom of the pan.

8. Deixe esfriar e guarde o doce de abóbora na geladeira até a hora de servir.

8. Let it cool down and keep it in the fridge until you serve it.

Remarks:

  • Buy a small pumpkin or a piece of pumpkin.
  • Pumpkin/Sugar ratio: for 1 bowl of pumpkin, use ½ half bowl of sugar. It's sweet enough.
  • In Brazil, the sugar ratio for compotes is 1 to 1, but it's too sweet.
  • "Doce de abóbora com coco" (Pumking compot"Doce de abóbora com coco" (Pumking compote with coconut) is tasty and also popular in Brazil. If you wish, you can add coconut flakes to the mashed pumpkin.
  • "Pão com doce de abóbora" (bread with pumpkin compote) is also good. Instead of jam, you can try pumpkin compote.
