love the kids site resources and the cartoons, this is exactly the kind of
resource I have been hunting for, I can't find kids books in Portuguese anywhere

Angola, then improved my skills as a teenager in Mozambique. I used to think the
only difference between Portuguese and Brazilian was the rolling of the R's,
but, boy was I wrong? I am trying to help at a small charity in Bahia and was
struggling at first to make the children understand me until I picked up a few
Brazilian words - then I found your website and realised just how many
differences there were. I am still having trouble with the R as I naturally roll
mine, and find it difficult to revert to the "h" sound needed to make
myself understood. They still know I am a foreigner (gringo), but I do get

Comments I am a singer in a jazz band called The Blue Gardenia JAZZTET and we do standards, swing, samba & bossa nova. I was looking up our band on the Internet and one link led to another--and that's how I found the "reply" you had left for me over 5 years ago!! I had forgotten that I had posted that question. This is amazing to find after all these years! But timely--as I have a piano player who wants to do more Brazilian tunes and I want to add more songs in Portuguese. I have been using an original homestyle phonetic guide to help me learn the pronunciation. I use recorded works by native & non-native Brazilians and cross-ref them with sheet music. As they sing, I make notations to indicate phonetic sounds. It has been quite effective for vocal materials and takes on the similarities or vocal characteristics of the singers I've patterned them after. To name a couple--I've used Antonio Carlos Jobim, Astrud Gilberto, and Gal Costa. I've also used American jazz singer Bobbe Norris. I want to thank you--a few years late(!!) I've been learning Portuguese privately quite a while but it's pretty hard to find an oppotunity to speak this language in Kyoto. I actually met a girl that we email each other, but since she speaks little english and I know a few words in portuguese, you can imagine its difficult for both of us. I email her in english, but when she replies her email is not very long...just because of her limited english...therefore, I indicated to her that she email in portuguese, which would allow her to express more to me and write more in emails, and I would try to translate it on my end.... Comments Dear Sonia: I LOVE Brazil. I think Brazil is JUST BEAUTIFUL! And because I love Brazil, I am ENCHANTED by Brazil's official tongue, PORTUGUESE! I have known (and studied) Portuguese since age 20, when a nice Brazilian businessman and his wife, residents of Miami, FL, taught me the basics of Portuguese grammar. I have Bibles and books at home in Portuguese and Spanish(which I have known since age eight), and greatly enjoy them. I also like Brazil's biggest daily newspaper, Folha de Sao Paulo. I have many good Brazilian friends, and greatly enjoy being with them. We often eat out at one of several Brazilian restaurants here in Dallas, TX. My best Brazilian friend is a woman named Maria, who is 52 and mother of two(a son and daughter. Her daughter is married and her son will be going away to college next fall). Maria is REALLY sharp! She has a bachelor's degree in elementary education and foreign languages--which is NO surprise since Maria knows Portuguese, Spanish, English, and French. When we first met, Maria was DELIGHTED to find an American that knew HER native language! Since then, Maria and I have gone out every now and then. I really appreciate the help Maria gives me with languages, and she thinks it NEAT that her American friend ACTUALLY KNEW some Portugese LONG before we crossed paths. I have shared with Maria my dream of travelling to her native land, and she is SO thrilled. Now she is looking into the possibility that she may take me along on her next visit to Brazil, and I sure HOPE it happens! In the meantime, please keep this great site going. It is SO wonderful! Comments I found your site on a link from the online guide to Salvador de Bahia. My interest comes from my close friendship with a young woman from Salvador who was an exchange student in rural Ohio several years ago. The culture shock was difficult for her to deal with, she comes from a family with substantial financial resources, and she found herself in a small town with not much to do when she was accustomed to the frenetic activity of Salvador. My daughter befriended her and we spent much time together and came to be like family, in fact, she calls me her third father (second is the friends she lived with). We correspond regularly via e-mail and occasionally we just have to talk in person so one of us will make a phone call. She is now at university in Salvador, having transferred back from Brasilia recently. She is a delightful person and has stimulated my interest in learning and experiencing more of things Brazilian. I have enjoyed some of the music for years, and often listen to Radio Bahia-Online, for example. I am currently studying Spanish, and when I get comfortable with it, I may begin to study Portuguese. When that time arrives, I will get in touch with you again. I also hope to travel to Salvador when possible.
